Cheaper than roaming: what a travel eSIM really costs
Outside the EU your operator bills roaming per megabyte or through a daily pass. A prepaid eSIM has one fixed price you know before you travel.
Inside the EU roaming is usually included and you rarely need an eSIM. Outside the EU an eSIM is almost always cheaper: a daily pass of 10 to 15 euro adds up to 140 to 210 euro over a two week trip, while a 10 GB eSIM bundle valid for 30 days costs a fraction of that. Is an eSIM always cheaper than roaming?
Outside the EU almost always. Inside the EU roaming is usually included in your plan, so an eSIM only helps when your own data bundle is too small.
Which countries fall outside Roam like at home?
Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Turkey and everything outside the European Economic Area. Your operator roaming rates apply there.
Will I still get a bill afterwards?
Not for the eSIM. You pay once up front. Turn mobile data off for your physical SIM so it cannot charge roaming.
Can I still call from my own number?
Yes. The eSIM is a second data profile, your physical SIM stays active for calls and text messages.
