Turkey sits outside the EU roaming zone, so a home plan often bills per megabyte there. A travel eSIM removes that risk without swapping SIM cards.
Coverage to expect
The major Turkish networks cover Istanbul, Antalya, Bodrum, Izmir, Cappadocia and the coastal routes with 4G, and 5G in most cities. In remote mountain villages you fall back to 4G or 3G, which is fine for maps and messaging.
How much data
- Four day Istanbul city trip: 3 GB
- Two weeks along the coast with navigation and photos: 10 GB
- Working remotely or sharing a hotspot: 20 GB or unlimited
Maps, WhatsApp and translation apps use very little. Video streaming and photo backups use the most.
Device registration
Turkey registers foreign handsets used with a local Turkish SIM. A travel eSIM roams on the Turkish networks instead, so that registration procedure does not apply while you stay within your bundle validity.
Install before departure
Install the profile at home on wifi. Validity only starts on your first real connection in Turkey. On arrival, turn data roaming on for the eSIM and mobile data off for your home SIM to avoid surprise charges.
Calls and SMS
Travel eSIMs are data profiles. Call through WhatsApp, Signal or FaceTime. Your home number stays reachable for SMS codes as long as you keep it active without data.
