Installing an eSIM usually takes under five minutes. Most problems come not from the eSIM itself but from one forgotten setting.
Before you start
- Check eSIM support: Settings, General, About, EID. An EID number means you are good to go.
- Your phone must not be SIM locked by your home operator.
- Always install on wifi, ideally at home before departure.
On iPhone
- Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM.
- Choose Use QR code and scan the code from your confirmation email.
- Label the profile, for example Travel data.
- Keep your usual SIM for calls and texts, and select the new eSIM for mobile data.
- Turn data roaming on for the eSIM.
On Android (Samsung, Pixel and others)
- Settings, Connections, SIM manager, Add eSIM.
- Scan the QR code or use the install link.
- Activate the profile and set it as default for data.
- Turn data roaming on for the new profile.
Not working?
- Data roaming is off for the eSIM, the number one cause.
- Mobile data is still on for your home SIM, switch it off.
- Select a local network manually under network selection.
- Restart your phone, this clears a stalled registration.
- Enter the APN manually using the details in your confirmation email.
Good to know
Validity starts at first actual use abroad, not at installation, so installing days ahead is perfectly safe.
